Spring Has Arrived - Pet Care Tips From Vet Nick MRCVS

Our online team sat down with vet Nick MRCVS to get his tips on how to look after your pet as the weather warms up.

As our pets spend more time outdoors, owners can follow these tips to ensure their companions are happy and healthier than ever before:

“As temperatures rise, fleas and ticks become more active. Ensure your pets are up-to-date with their flea and tick prevention treatments. These pesky parasites can cause discomfort and health issues, including Lyme disease.

“Just like humans, pets can suffer from seasonal allergies. Watch for signs of allergies in your pets, such as scratching, biting, or skin irritation, and consult your vet for the best treatment options.

Spring rain creates standing water, which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes that can transmit heartworm disease. Ensure your pet is on a preventive heartworm medication as recommended by your veterinarian.

Spring shedding is common as pets lose their winter coats. Regular grooming helps remove excess fur and reduces the amount of hair around your home. It also provides an opportunity to check for any skin issues hidden under their coat.

“Schedule an annual check-up and get any vaccinations that your pet might be missing. This ensures your pet is protected against diseases and is in good health for the coming year.

“If you are planning on starting a new gardening project this spring, be cautious of what you plant in your garden and what fertilisers or pesticides you use, as some can be harmful to pets.

“Spring months are a great time to increase your pet’s exercise routine. Many pets gain weight over the winter, and spring is the perfect time to get back into shape with longer walks or playtime outdoors.

“With doors and windows open more often, there’s an increased chance your pet could wander off. Make sure they have a microchip and up-to-date ID tags to help them find their way back to you.

Ensure your pets have access to fresh water and shaded areas when they're outside. Overheating can happen quickly in the warmer months, even in the spring.

If you’re planning spring outings or road trips, remember to secure your pet safely in the vehicle. Consider a pet seatbelt or carrier to keep them safe and prevent distractions.”
